Car break-ins hit gym users

MOTORISTS are scared to leave their cars in a leisure centre car park following a spate of break-ins according to one victim.

The man, who did not wish to be identified, said five cars including his own have been targeted by thieves in the past three weeks at Glenholme Leisure Centre in Crook.

He said: “There is a CCTV camera there but it only covers the entrance and the car park isn’t well lit. People have even resorted to parking in the disabled bays because they’re at the front and are well lit.
“I know several people whose cars have been broken in to who no longer want to go to the gym because they don’t feel safe leaving their cars. Something needs to be done.”

PC Billy Crampsie from Crook Neighbourhood Beat team said the thieves were opportunists and urged people not to leave valuables on display.

He said: “These are opportunist criminals, they are targeting what’s left in the car.
“Our message is take that opportunity away.
“If you’re using the gym you  can always leave valuables in the lockers there and if you can avoid taking things out with you in the first place all the better.”

Durham County Council said: “Staff at the leisure centre have increased patrols of the car park and an additional light has been installed outside the centre after a number of break- ins to vehicles in the car park. Management are working with police to try and catch those responsible but in the mean time we would like to remind visitors not to leave any valuables on display.

“In recent weeks, thieves have targeted the car park on a number of separate occasions and anyone with any information is asked to call the independent charity, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You can remain anonymous.”
