Reveller got hand stuck in letterbox

AN intoxicated Weardalian got her hand stuck in a stranger’s letterbox after she mistook their home for her own.

The woman was attempting to get into the house in Stanhope when police arrived and arrested her for a public disorder offence.

The incident was one of 162 calls made to police in Weardale during November, a drop from the same month last year. Of those calls, only a small percentage were actual crimes.

Other crimes included two thefts in Frosterley, one of which saw a block of fluorspar stolen from outside somebody’s home.

Two pick axes were also stolen from a derelict house currently being refurbished in Stanhope.

Police also arrested a man in Upper Weardale for theft of a water pump and the attempted theft of a water feature. Other incidents included a farmer who was accidently shot in the hand by a hunter on moorland near Stanhope.

Sergeant Dave Lyall from the neighbourhood beat team said that despite the number of calls made to police dropping by almost a quarter in the last few months, the fear of crime was still high.

He said: “We are on call to have 24 per cent less crime in Weardale compared to last but still fear of crime is growing. People are more worried about becoming victims when in fact the dale is a very safe place to live.”
