Tribute seat to cost 28lbs
A SCHOOL governor from Tow Law will begin a strict diet for two months to raise money for a seat in memory of his late wife.
Charlie Donaghy hopes to lose two stone by Monday, December 14, and is urging people to sponsor him so that he can raise £1,000 to create the memorial seat at Tow Law Millennium Primary School.
His wife Alice, who died in July following a short illness, was also a popular governor at the school and the school council has thrown its weight behind Charlie’s efforts.
The council plans to create a secret garden containing spring bulbs, an amphitheatre, a crocodile made from willow and a large weeping willow memorial tree around which the bench would be placed.
Headteacher Lisa Jackson said: “Mrs Alice was such a big part of this school and all our emotions are still very raw.
She is missed everyday and one thing the children, including many who have left the school, always remember is her sitting and reading with them.
“That’s why they wanted this seat as it would be somewhere for them to sit and remember her. What Charlie is doing is excellent and we want as many people to sponsor him as possible so that we can create this garden.”
The weeping willow will be used by pupils to hang ribbons and messages in memory of Alice and members of the school council said they thought she would have liked it.
“One councillor said: “She would have said it was super duper. I think she would have been really pleased.”
The pupils have already collected 200 willows which will be used for the crocodile and they hope to be using the garden by spring.
