Pull down yob gang hot spot

POLICE have called for the demolition of a derelict building in a Wear Valley town to stop gangs gathering there.

Fences and boards have been put up around the former Lincab taxi office next to the Thistleflat Farm estate play area in Crook, but youths are still getting into the premises and causing a nuisance to neighbouring houses.

Police broke up a gang of nearly 30 youths two weeks ago following complaints from nearby residents, and say the only solution is to get rid of the building.

Sgt Sean Davis said: “It is a recurring problem with gangs getting into the building. It is incredibly dangerous in there and there could be a serious accident, and although it is boarded up it is clear the youths are determined to get in and they have pulled some of the boards down.

“We are aware of the problem and make regular visits, but while it is still there it will be attractive to gangs as a hangout. “Neighbours are also concerned at the numbers of youths congregating there and the level of noise they are making.

“A lot of damage has been caused to the building and fencing but we can’t say for sure when that was done and who was responsible. We have spoken to the new owners of the site who have told us they want to demolish it but are waiting for officers from Wear Valley District Council to complete a bat survey.

“As far as we are concerned, the quicker the building is gone the better.” A spokeswoman for Wear Valley District Council said: “It is a requirement by law that a bat survey is completed before the building can be demolished and we are waiting for this to be completed by an independent consultant. We are aware of problems with anti-social behaviour at the site and are looking at ways of preventing unauthorised access onto the premises.”

Cllr for Crook South Geoff Mowbray said: “I’ve had calls in the past about anti-social behaviour at the play area but not the house. I thought the problem had gone away because I hadn’t heard anything for a while but if they’re all going into the house then no-one would see them anyway. I’ve had reports of gangs from Mown Meadows taking alcohol up there and have alerted the police. I can guarantee its not coming from the off-licence and I suspect someone is selling it to them privately.”
