Railway takes positives from owner change
A CHANGE in ownership of the Weardale Railway will have a positive affect according to the Trust’s chairman.Speculation about the railway’s future has been rampant after ECT announced it was looking to sell its 75 per cent ownership.
Members of the Weardale Railway Trust, Wear Valley District Council and Durham County Council met with ECT’s preferred buyer last week and trust chairman Ian Gardener says things are looking very positive.
Ian said: “We talked about the future of the railway and I am confident that this takeover will prove to be a very positive step for us and interest has already been expressed in extending the line to Bishop Auckland.
“Yes, these takeovers will have an affect but I am sure they will be positive rather than negative. It is business as normal however, and we are still attracting a lot of people to Weardale.
“Our next event will be the Father’s Day special on Sunday, June 15, where fathers can travel for free so long as they are with a child, even if their child is in his 70s.” There will also be a display of vintage cars at Stanhope station.”
