Blitz on speeding in village

DRIVERS in a Wear Valley village are more likely to be caught speeding after police decided extra enforcement was needed. (May 30 edition)

Police will be enforcing speed limits on Howden-le-Wear’s Hargill Road after the Durham and Darlington Road Casualty Reduction Forum discovered 46 per cent of motorists were exceeding the 30mph speed limit.

Cllr John Bailey from Howden said: “I welcome anything that will curb speeding and calm traffic because I know a lot of people are concerned about it. Hargill Road is the sort of road that attracts boy racers which we are trying to stamp out and it is brilliant the police have recognised it. I know PC Mike Sammut has worked very hard for the village and it is something we will keep an eye on.”

Officers will spend more of their time not spent on emergency calls monitoring speeds on the road.
