Play park nicknamed ‘beer garden’ as gangs take over
A WEAR Valley play area has been dubbed a “beer garden” by angry neighbours. The play area at Thistleflat Road has proved a popular hangout for gangs of youths, and nearby residents have become fed up with the amount of litter, most of it alcohol related, that has been left on the ground.
One concerned neighbour who didn’t wish to be named said: “Parents are always having to clean up after them. I know there have been broken bottles left in the play area and plastic bags which look like they may have contained drugs. It’s a long term problem that could have serious consequences.”
Cllr for Crook South Ann Carrick said: “I have contacted the district council about the situation and have asked for lights to be put up. “The problem seems to be mainly at night, and the police have said lighting would help them keep a better eye on what the gangs are getting up to.
“I think its youngsters coming from other parts of Crook, as I know children around here wouldn’t behave like that. “We all wanted that play area, but it’s a shame that some people are abusing it.
It is a lovely, play area and it’s not right that 15, 16 and 17 year-olds are using it as a hangout.
“I have also asked for better parking so that parents taking their kids to the play area can park next to it rather than in the neighbouring streets, and Durham County Council have agreed to put a sign up warning drivers to slow down as they pass the play area.”
