School invites pub teams to take advantage of its all weather pitch

A WEAR Valley school is looking for pub football teams to take advantage of its new, all weather pitch.

Staff at Parkside Comprehensive in Willington hope to have the new pitch up and running by September, and are now visiting local pubs to gauge their interest in using it.

Pubs have been asked to consider using the pitch for games for their existing teams and also if they would like to set up new teams to take part in competitions and small sided leagues.

Allan Langford, director of specialism at Parkside School said: “The new pitch will provide a fantastic football facility for our area. “We want to ensure that all members of the community are aware of the new facility and have the opportunity to get involved.

“Costs for using the pitch are being projected at £15 to £20 for a third of the pitch per hour. “This is a fraction of the cost if you consider there would be seven or eight players per side in terms of what other locations charge.”

Allan would like to hear from anyone who would potentially like to hire the new pitch or take part in leagues and competitions. Development plans for the pitch are located at Parkside School in the main reception and the community entrance.

Pupils are also selling raffle tickets in a bid to raise funds to support their application for the third generation all weather football pitch on the school ground.

Prizes include an RM laptop, signed Newcastle away shirt and £25 cash prize donated by Britton and Robson Pharmacy in Willington. Linda Davies, headteacher, said: “As part of our application to the Football Foundation we need to carry out some of our own fundraising to show our commitment to the project.

“We hope that we are supported in our fundraising efforts in order to bring a first class football facility to the area which will benefit not only our students but the whole community.

“We would like to thank all of those local companies who have donated prizes as part of our continued fundraising”.

The raffle tickets cost £1 each and are available from Parkside School, Willington Resource Centre, Crook Community Partnership and Willington Children’s Centre. The draw will take place at Parkside School on Thursday, June 5.
