Police raid homes to stop revenge attacks

POLICE raided three homes in Wear Valley to prevent revenge attacks after a man received serious slash wounds during a fight in a Bishop Auckland pub.

About 100 officers raided homes in Crook and Howden-le-Wear as well as a travellers site in West Rainton, and although no arrests were made officers say it was a “justified” operation which would stop further violence between two gangs.

Officers raided the homes in Greenhead and Hope Street in Crook and Church Street in Howden-le-Wear at 8pm on Friday, and came after two gangs made threats and counter-threats to each other after one man had to be treated in hospital for serious slash wounds after a brawl in a Bishop Auckland pub.

Assistant Chief Constable Michael banks said: “The scale of the operation on Friday was essential to prevent and detect criminality and, importantly, to minimise the risk to the public.

“Two factions have been making threats and counter-threats to each other over the past few days and a series of incidents has taken place, which includes one man being left with serious slash wounds.

“No one is above the law and no-one has the authority to take the law into their own hands.”

Officers seized firearms, suspected drugs, a suspected stolen caravan and scooter and a large amount of cash.
