You all want another holiday, by GeorgeWEAR Valley residents have voted overwhelmingly in favour of St George¹s Day being declared a public holiday.A Wear Valley Mercury poll, taken on the streets of Crook last week, has shown the patriotism of locals who believe April 23 should be a public holiday for everyone in England.
The majority of responses, 82 per cent, were in favour of the holiday in honour of the patron saint of England.
Ernie Parker, 64, from Crook said: ³The Irish have St Patrick¹s Day so why shouldn¹t we have our own day.
³We don¹t seem to have an identity like other countries but this could help to change that.² Most of the 80 people polled spoke of their pride in being English and were in overwhelming favour of an extra day off work.
Brenda Grant, 63, from Crook said: ³We don¹t get that many people celebrating it at the moment and it would be good for working people to have an extra holiday.² Some people saw the holiday as an opportunity to celebrate, in the spirit of St Patrick¹s Day.
John Love, 19, from Crook said: ³It should be named a national drinking day.
We all need an extra holiday, there aren¹t enough of them.² However, not everyone was in favour of the proposal.
Martin Taylor, 36, from Crook said: ³It wouldn¹t be a good idea. Nobody even knows what day it is on. Try asking someone what day St George¹s day is and I bet most people couldn¹t tell you.
