Fighting fire sparks great teamwork

BUDDING firefighters from Parkside Comprehensive School, Willington, passed a demanding course with flying colours recently.
The 11 pupils received awards on March 28 after completing the 12-week Firebreak course organised by County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
Each of the students was presented with an impressive portfolio of achievement which included an NVQ level 1 Working with Others.
The programme is based upon the trainee firefighter course and includes activities such as teambuilding, orienteering, casualty care, fire awareness and road casualty reduction.
Instruction was provided by operational fire fighters and several partner agencies including the Primary Care Trust and Connexions and is aimed towards improving self esteem, teamwork and promoting an increased awareness of social responsibility.
Firebreak¹ together with a number of similar courses demonstrates the commitment of the modern Fire Service to the development of young people across the region. It is also hoped that engagement with young people on schemes such as this will produce direct benefits in the reduction of nuisance fires within the county.
