Stunned by generosity
CROOK Rotarians were staggered by the generosity of Wear Valley folk and businesses after collecting £1,750 for the Wheelchair Foundation on Tuesday.Stephen Murphy, who arranged the event, and Ken Davison held the prime spot at the Co-op supermarket and were overwhelmed by the public response.
Mr Murphy said: ³We would like to thank the public and our sponsors who have been brilliant this money will buy 20-25 wheelchairs They will cost between £50 and £75 each.² ³The schools have also shown us really strong support and created displays for the Civic Centre and the library (Crook) to raise public awareness.² Mr Davison said: ³The people have been brilliant and have given so generously.
³It¹s very encouraging and all of the money is going to a very good cause.² Rotary president Roger Barmby, said: ³The day has been incredibly
successful- we thought we might raise enough for 10 wheelchairs but in fact that number has doubled because of the public response.² The Wheelchair Foundation was founded in 2000 and has since been able to provide 500,000 wheelchairs to people in need, including those born disabled, war victims, landmine and accident victims.
