Candidates drop party affiliations for nominatiion
WILLINGTON is one step closer to its own Town Council: and it looks as if party politics will be left out in the cold.Unusually, candidates agreed not to put their party affiliation on their nomination forms.
Cllr Myers said: ³For the first few months at least, we want to keep party politics out of it.
³It could carry on indefinitely that way.
³The idea is to encourage candidates who want the best for Willington, who care about the future of the town.
³It seems to have worked as we have had 19 nominations.² The names of the 19 nominations will be released on April 10 and the elections will be held in tandem with the District Elections on Thursday May 3.
The Greater Willington Town Council steering group has been pushing for a Town Council for the past three years and is delighted by the progress.
Cllr Brian Myers, vice chairman of the steering group, said:
³The time has come to redress that balance and give us back more say over our own affairs by not having a council based in Crook, Durham or anywhere else but in Willington!
³The cost is minimal, with low overheads, with a part time Clerk, and will be met from our Council Tax payments, 35p per week in a Band A property equating to the cost of a Mars Bar.
³Excellent value by anyone¹s standards.²
