Residents speak out over bull ring

IT appears to be the end of the line for the Tow Law Auction Mart, and most residents want it to hurry up and get moo-ving.
The 125-year-old building stands alone in the middle of a building site which will soon to be filled with McInerney Homes North East houses.
Mrs Jaqueline Anderson: ³I think it¹s a mess.
³If they pull it down that¹s a good thing otherwise how will they sell the houses around it?² Tow Law resident Marion Eddleston said: ³The bull ring should go it¹s unsightly.² Mrs Swatton: ³It needs pulling down because it¹s an eyesore.
³Even when it was open, the smell was terrible!² Colin Armstrong, 20, said: ³I think it should be ripped down   it¹s just a mess really.² Lee Stephenson, from Tow Law, said: ³It should be knocked down and then they could build more houses on it.² Mrs Turnbull said: ³I used to live beside it and it was very well used when it was open.
³It was different then but now it should come down.² But not everybody wants the building to go: some feel recent vandalism attacks have made the building¹s demise premature.
Alison Miller: ³It¹s a shame to knock it down but it has been badly vandalised.
If it was in its original state, it would be good to preserve it but at the moment, the state it¹s in, it¹s just going to get vandalised even more.
³It¹s not going to get any better.² Rachel Bradley: ³I think they should just leave it there.
³From what I can tell, there are going to be too many houses otherwise.
³They could build around it it is part of the village.² Tow Law district Cllr Colin Hayton, said: ³People will regret the passing of the market but not that particular building.
³The death knell, along with so many other things here, was the foot and mouth disease.
³It was a huge area to maintain with nothing coming in.² ³It¹s better if it¹s knocked down for houses.
³We were offered it and if we could have used it for, perhaps, a drop in centre. We would have, but there are no funds to maintain it.² Residents can still write to Robert Hope, Director of Regeneration at Wear Valley District Council until April 10 if they have any objections or thoughts on the matter.
