Grants windfall for leisure groups

PLANS for a £26,000 overhaul of Crook Town Football Club have taken the next step.
If the money is approved it will mean a new bar, roof, carpets, toilets, and makeover for the club, which, by chairman Steve Buddle¹s own admission, has seen better days.
He said: "I've been chairman for 12 years and I can¹t remember an overhaul of this scale.
"At the moment, the ordinary man on the street would not bring his wife here for a night out for risk of getting the evil eye for a week.
"If we get the money it would be brilliant news.
"The Crook community would be able to have Christenings and all sorts here.² Proposals drawn up by Crook Town FC, Glenholme Bowls Club, Crook Cricket Club, Thistleflat Community play area group and ward members met with full approval from councillors at a Community services committee meeting held on Wednesday.
As well as a makeover for the club, Glenholme Leisure centre would receive £40,000 for improvements; a new play area at Thistleflat would be launched; Crook Cricket Club would receive money for better facilities; and improvements would happen for Glenholme Park and play area.
The Hunwick community has also put together spending plans which look set to be successful.
These would include better facilities for the cricket club, a new play area, tree planting, and a new five-a-side football pitch.
The plans are to be funded by section 106 cash which is compensation given by the Government each time a new house is built and which is to be spent by the community .
Cllr Brown, speaking at the meeting, said: "I would be delighted to see this happen.
"There has been a lot of community involvement especially with the Thistleflat community play area group.
The improvements to the football and cricket facilities are much needed because they are so well used."
